Cherringham- Scared to Death

When classic horror movie star Basil Coates becomes the victim of a series of scary pranks, the local police put it down to a crazed fan. Just pranks, after all ...
But with Halloween only days away, the spectre of murder suddenly visits the ghostly Coates mansion on the hill outside Cherringham - and Jack and Sarah find themselves caught in a mystery worthy of Basil’s spookiest roles ...
Set in the sleepy English village of Cherringham, the detective series brings together an unlikely sleuthing duo: English web designer Sarah and American ex-cop Jack. Thrilling and deadly - but with a spot of tea - it's like Rosamunde Pilcher meets Inspector Barnaby. Each of the self-contained episodes is a quick read for the morning commute, while waiting for the doctor, or when curling up with a hot cuppa.

This description sounded interesting but once i began to read i found it very difficult and boring to read. While it had an interesting plot, the writing itself was bare. Typical hollywood horror, took place in this actors house (Basil Coates),with things such as snakes, noose hanging, cryptic messages, etc.. all portrayed as just some prank at Basil's expense. Two detectives are called in to investigate, and the book seems to move pretty quickly from here on out, since another message along with a seemingly dangerous snake appears, saying death will arrive tonight. So when that night comes, so does another prank. This one with a wicker man set on fire. BTW all these pranks are from Basil's movie's back in the day when they were popular. Once the wicker man was put out and everyone was sure the house would be safe, they all went inside to find surprise surprise Basil dead on the floor. So the two detectives decide to look into crew members who made the props for his movies, and they find one still alive, who just happens to have a son who  guess what? Is also in the FX special effects business. After speaking with the both of them the two detectives have decided they know what really happened, and the one detective (woman) decides to go and confront him alone, and wait for her son (who's waiting for a ride from a friend) to go to the halloween party she was suppose to meet her fellow detective friend, to go there and pick him up and tell him to go to the Coates mansion. Once she is inside the mansion, everything is deathly quiet, and she is finding her way downstairs to face the killer. I'm making this sound so much more suspenseful than it actually was! I felt this part of the book should have been edge of your seat thriller,  but instead it was like watching a bad horror movie that instead of being scared you literally are laughing at the stupidly of it all! SO i do not recommend this book- but if someone has read it and you feel different tell me why?
